“The Rocks” by Debra Martin

February 4, 2023 @ 11:00 am EST

In the 1850s, Wilmington, Delaware’s fully-developed Underground Railroad network included Black and white agents, merchant schooner captains traveling between Virginia and DE, and citizens who kept a watchful eye on the streets. The Rocks—also known as Swedes Landing and Fort Christina Park on East 7th Street peninsula—was one place where significant and risky encounters took place between agent Captain James Fountain and Black agent/conductors including Harry A. Craigg, Jr. “Stationmasters” Thomas Garrett (Wilmington) and William Still (Philadelphia) documented these interactions in letters and journals, some of which have been preserved.
